NCIPC announces the new WISQARS Fatal Injury Mapping Module (March 2010): A new mapping feature has been added to WISQARS, the interactive injury-related database system of CDC's National Center for Injury Prevention and Control. The dataset allows users to generate customized, color-coded maps showing suicide incidence nationally and by region, state, and county. Since the data covers seven years (2000-2006), it can produce reliable county-level suicide death rates, as well as rates of deaths due to other intentional and unintentional injuries. Users can also specify race/ethnicity, sex, and age group or age range. States and communities can use the maps to target prevention planning, promote awareness, complement suicide-related news stories, and inform legislators and policymakers. Wonderful News for all YR [Yellow Ribbon] people (Board, ListServ, Chapters, Program sites, etc.) and others: As of today, April 9, 2009, Yellow Ribbon's Ask4Help Program for Youth, and the Be A Link Program for Adults are both now listed on SPRC/ AFSP's Best Practices Registry (BPR). The link to the actual listing is http://www.sprc.org/news/index.asp.
This is a huge, positive step for the entire program and for all of you who are working with schools, communities, agencies and funders. This is the listing that you can all now say that YR's programs are listed, accepted and "Best Practices". The wording says: Programs listed in Section III of the BPR address specific objectives of the National Strategy for Suicide Prevention and have had their content reviewed for accuracy, safety, likelihood of meeting objectives, and adherence to prevention program guidelines.
Congratulations to everyone throughout the entire YR Family, who have helped, guided, edited, worked and trained to move YR to this milestone in Suicide Prevention. It validates all of the hard work that you have been doing in every state, the Native Reservations, the communities, both urban and rural, with the youth and the trusted adults, with those who wanted to help and those who weren't sure.
I would like to thank Yellow Ribbon's International Board for your guidance over the years. My special and deeply heartfelt congratulations go to my wife, Dar Emme, our Founder and Curriculum Coordinator/ Lead Author, who along with the Curriculum team and Advisors, have worked tirelessly for many years to make this happen, but more importantly in helping to save countless lives all across this country and beyond.
Congratulations to you all.
